I agree. Yet more variety disappearing from the ale scene. Even if they
carry the labels, the brews will be different. And after a year or two,
the brands will be "rationalized" and we will have lost a bit more
variety.

You'll be OK then.. they are continuing with their own pub management,
but are purely going into partnership with Wells' for brewing.. the new
brewery company will be called "Wells and Youngs", but the Youngs estate
remains under the current ownership.. I suspect there may be a greater
availabilty of the Wells product range in Youngs' pubs though..

There are a lot of Young's pubs in London. I know a bloke who navigates by
them (he has their directory with him at all times). The beer will change.
It is not known how well Young's yeast will do in Wells' modern fermenters
and that is quite apart from Wells having to match the London water (this
bit should be fairly easy to do). When Young's took on Waggledance it
changed quite substantially (I got several bottles each of Vaux and Young's
and did a side by side taste test). Quite apart from anything else, brewing
on different gear will give different hop utilisation which will affect the
flavour possibly as much as the yeast performance in its new environment.
Hop utilisation doesn't just affect the actual bitterness (IBU) but also
the perceived bitterness, in particular how harsh the bitterness comes
across as. It can't all be worked out on a computer. Brewing is not a
science, it is an art.
